Anais Nin
posted 2002 by Bill Dion
This author's work would be a lot more popular if people could pronounce her name without risk of embarassment. Does anybody know how Ms. Nin's name is properly pronounced? As with Constantine Cavafy, Kahlil Gibran and who knows how many others, I have heard a number of different pronunciations. Duh, does it rhyme with anything we know of?

I've heard it pronounced (by someone who SEEMS to know)as:
First name: Ah-nah-ees
Accent is on third syllable. The diacritical mark indicates that the "a" next to the "i" is to be pronounced separately from the "i" (not together as a diphthong, as in "rain.")
Last name: Nin rhymes with "seen." It's French.
